As per the April global economic outlook of the IMF, India is likely to end 2026-27 with a GDP size of $4.15 trillion, below the UK\u2019s $4.26 trillion. The drop in ranking is possibly due to the recent revision in base year due to which the nominal GDP has been revised downward. The depreciating rupee has also played its role in the fall in India\u2019s ranking.</p><p>India had surpassed the UK in 2022-23 to become the fifth largest economy in the world, and was slated to become the fourth largest economy by 2025-26. However, the latest government GDP estimates released in February show that the nominal GDP of the country has declined from the Rs 357 lakh crore in the old series to Rs 345.5 lakh crore in the new series. At an average exchange rate of Rs 87 for FY26,&nbsp;India\u2019s GDP in dollar terms would fell short of $4&nbsp;trillion.</p><p>\u201CThe change in the rank reflects new base year of GDP where nominal GDP is lower than old base GDP by 4%. Further rupee depreciated against the dollar by 11% in FY26. However, the 301 Colony tribal settlement, established in 2001, resulted in the fragmentation of the corridor. And as resort owners and farmers started installing fences around their land, it obstructed the free movement of herds. </p><p>\u201CA herd with nine elephants visited Chinnakanal and roamed Pethatti and Njandar areas for a few days in December. It returned to Njandar in February and a female elephant delivered the calf on February 24. After the delivery, the herd shifted to the abandoned KRV Estate. </p><p>On March 25, it marched through Korambara, Thalakulam, Thondimala areas and entered the forest through the Anayirangal dam area. The behaviour of the herd revealed their attachment to the Chinnakanal habitat,\u201D said R Ajayan, a farmer in Santhanpara. </p><p>According to Ajayan, elephant herds are a frequent presence in Chinnakanal, which has intensified human-wildlife conflict in the area. </p><p>\u201CThe decision to establish the 301 Colony in the elephant corridor was a blunder. Only 37 families remain in the colony. As many as 49 people have died in the area since 1995. We recorded the delivery of a calf in the area in February. The area is important from a conservation point of view. There were proposals to relocate the residents of 301 Colony to revenue land and to construct wildlife crossings on the national highway at Thondimala and Sankarapandian Mettu to ensure free access to the elephant corridor,\u201D forest section officer Harrison Sasi said.</p><p>According to conservationists, the residents of 301 Colony have leased their land to cardamom farmers.</p><p>Leaseholders erect fencing, which disrupts the movement of elephants. Dismissing claims of an emotional connect of elephants with Chinnakanal, wildlife researcher P S Easa said these are anthropomorphic interpretations which attribute human traits to animals.</p><p>He said the corridor connecting Chinnakanal and Devikulam should be reopened to ensure free movement of elephants. A senior forest official said elephant births are frequently reported in Chinnakanal.</p><p>There was one reported in the area in 2021, followed by others at Mankulam tea estate and Vaguvarrai. The 100 sqkm area extending from Chinnakanal and Mathikettan to Bodimettu is a natural habitat of elephants. It is their foraging ground. During the lean season, dolphins tend to concentrate in the deeper pools of the river.</p><p><strong>Field data analysed</strong></p><p>The WII\u2019s study analysed field data on the distribution of Ganges River dolphins, gharials (crocodilian species with long, thin snouts), and other important aquatic life, including turtles. It also assessed water depth, water quality, and seasonal river flow patterns, along with 10-day flow data from CWC</p><p>The study found that during the lean season, dolphins were largely confined to deep pools, indicating that reduced river flows significantly affect habitat availability for aquatic species.</p><p>The findings underscored the importance of maintaining adequate environmental flows in the Chambal River to support aquatic biodiversity and ecological integrity.</p><p>During recent discussions at the National Wildlife Board meeting, it was noted that the issue involves aspects of river flow regulation and water management, which fall under the CWC's mandate.
