BANGALORE: South India offers potential for video conferencing as it has key verticals like IT/ITes, government related activities, education and manufacturing which deploy video conferencing on a large scale.

National players and mid-sized companies have been creating a bouquet of solutions for this promising market ever since the effect of global recession was being felt in India. Avaya GlobalConnect, a leading player in unified communications, has witnessed a growth of 50% plus in this vertical year-on-year. The company has established a Customer Studio in Bangalore, a platform to create solutions with customers.

Orva Networks Pvt. Ltd, a Bangalore- based network management consultancy organization, has witnessed a 30%-40% sales increase in the telepresence domain over the last three months.

Given the encouragement, the company is in the process of upgrading its video conferencing unit, besides conducting road shows.

“According to Frost & Sullivan, the TelePresence market is growing rapidly but on a smaller base.

From 2007 to 2008, it saw nearly 100% growth. In 2008, it was a $4 million market. Growth rates will moderate as the base widens. In the next two to three years, we expect growth rates in the high 40% range after which it should moderate to 15 per cent 20 per cent,” said Rajesh Shetty, vice president, Cisco, India & SAARC.

Cisco has tied up with Tata Communications for Public Tele- Presence rooms. Last month, Cisco announced new applications like the Cisco TelePresence 1300, suitable for any conference room environment and doesn’t require a dedicated room. The company has extended the service to lower bandwidth connections.

Organisations are increasingly investing in video conferencing as a tool to improve productivity and control costs, both tangible and intangible. They are willing to invest in high definition video equipment (rather than standard definition) and in telepresence technology. “Video conferencing has seen significant changes with technology available from the desktop, (at attractive prices), to high end communications (with the advent of high definition and improvements in telepresence) which make meetings truly like being there,” said Harish Naik, Product Manager, Puthur Infotech Pvt. Ltd, a city-based technology marketing-one stop office solution company. The company has witnessed a 10%-15% growth rate since last October.

Even organizations with multiple offices within the same city are setting up TelePresence rooms to help executives collaborate without the need to move out of their work premises. This is definitely a big advantage in terms of time saved. “Being is the first and only Platinum Certified Partner of Polycom in India, we provide highly specialized pre-sales,”
