Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Ltd (Becil), a mini-ratna PSU under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, is on a mission mode as it plans to double its turnover by this year end. George Kuruville, Chairman and Managing Director of Becil, shared his plans with Prashant Mukherjee of The Sunday Standard and hope to list the company in next two years.
Excerpts:
How do you plan to build Becil as a brand?
We are a zero-debt company. Our immediate target plan is to cross `200 crore turnover by this financial year end. We conduct own marketing activities. We have already started the brand building exercise and promotional activities. Becil is also planning to get listed on the exchange in next two years
So the business has been good for the company.
We have a turnover of around `100 crore. In 2015, we touched `125 crore. This year, we plan to touch around `200 crore. In last few years, our employee base has increased from 25-30 to around 80 now. This has helped in growing our turnover. We have also invested funds in building our new office in Noida. We had started expanding our business, keeping in mind we will get some projects from Prasar Bharati. But thereafter, the projects directly didn’t come to us. Since, Becil would charge a 9 per cent consultancy fee and Prasar Bharati has its own pricing policies. After that, we started focusing on other verticals.
So your major revenues are from FM business?
The actual spurt in our business happened when we got the entire FM Phase II project. That time, the entire mandate was given to Becil and this year also, the FM Phase III Project has came to us. In 54 locations, we are working on the end-to-end project. This is a `70 crore business, which we are executing now. And we hope to complete the entire project by September 2016.
How has auctioning of FM channels helped Becil financially?
From the auctions, the entire money goes to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. Our job is for installation and we earn flat 10 per cent margin.
What other modes of revenue generation you are working?
CCTV and surveillance business is going to be a big driver for our business. We are carrying out the job for projects- Ministry of Defence, Sena Bhavan and the South Block. This was a `70 crore project. We also won the Food Corporation of India project and Railway baggage controls for stations in open tendering. This is one vertical which is bound to grow.
Message to the youth?
The youth need to be focused and continue with their interest. And they should not be selfish and should think of serving the society.
