BANGALORE: Two militants from Manipur who surrendered and were sent on a vocational training and rehabilitation programme on Tuesday said before this they couldn’t imagine living a normal life.

“We are happy that we could do this after coming to The Art of Living,” said one of the surrendered militants.

Amar Singh and Bunty were part of a group of 128 militants who participated in the intensive spiritual, vocational and rehabilitation training programme provided by the Art of Living.

On August 6, 2010, this group was handed over by the Central government to The Art of Living for rehabilitation.

The group was then taken to the Art of Living Ashram in Pune where they were provided with medical aid and other help.

The group was trained for almost 90 days by the Art of Living and its sister organisation, the International Association for Human Values, said Samir Jolly, faculty and project director, The Art of Living.

Restoring normalcy

“Our technical training and rehabilitation will help them find jobs,” he said. “A few of them have already found jobs.”

He said it was a challenging task to rehabilitate them.  “We had to deal with them with a spiritual and human approach. They stayed with us without any boundary walls,” said Jolly. “After the rehabilitation programme, they do not want to pick up the gun.”

He said their methodology has been greatly appreciated. “We are getting many such more requests from the government,” he said.
