The place of the bull: Basavanagudi

From our online archive

BANGALORE: Basavanagudi, one of the oldest areas of Bangalore is named after the Basavanagudi temple devoted to the bull, Nandi.

In Kannada, ‘basava’ means bull and ‘gudi’ stands for temple. The place that was once lined with trees is now slowly seeing commercialisation.

Still the place boasts of old traditional houses. It also has Ramakrishna ashram and Shankar Matt. One popular festival held every year in Basavanagudi is the groundnut fair. Every year, a two day fair of peanuts is held near the premises of Dodda Ganapathi temple, a temple dedicated to         Ganesha. It’s called Kadlekai Parishe. Different kinds of groundnuts are exhibited and sold during this time.
