Metro: Tunnel burrowing work begins on phase I

BANGALORE: After much anticipation and delay, Namma Metro’s second tunnel boring machine - Margarita has now started burrowing at the Majestic Underground for the Phase I, East-West corridor.

TBM - Margarita will take over an year’s time to complete the tunneling work between Majestic and Cricket Stadium. The tunneling work is expected to be slow as at each underground stations Central College, Vidhana Soudha and Cricket Stadium, the machine will have to be dismantled and assembled again.

The underground tunneling work began in the first week of June with the official inauguration of the burrowing work by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.

Helen has so far burrowed about 60 metres and has crossed the stretch of Dhanwantri Road.

The TBMs willl move along Kempe Gowda Road till Mysore Bank headquarters.

On the slow pace of work, BMRCL spokesperson said, “The terrain here is full of granite, we have to carry out the work very carefully.” On the North-South corridor, the tunnelling work between Swastik and K R Road is yet to begin.
