BANGALORE: Family members of eight murder convicts ran riot on the City Civil Court premises on Monday as they were “agitated” over the judgment pronounced by  the court.

Around 10 am, the police produced the eight accused before the magistrate, who convicted them to life term.

This order did not go down well with their family members who were present on the court premises.

They barged into the court registrar’s chamber and ransacked the place by breaking the window panes and furniture. The police immediately rushed the accused to Parapana Agrahara Central Prison. Central DCP B R Ravikanthe Gowda said: “The convicts were sent to Parappana Agrahara jail. However, no case was registered against their family members who created tension on the court premises.” Tension prevailed on the premises for nearly an hour with a man banging his head against a notice board and a relative breaking a window pane with his hand. The Ulsoor Gate police have registered cases under sections 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of s 50), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC against them. The convicted, along with another person,  were involved in a 2006 murder.

Last Friday, four of them, who were taken to the 17th Fast Track Court, had escaped from the court premises. Three were arrested later.
