BANGALORE: Kempegowda Awards instituted by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike will be given to only 45 recipients this year,  unlike the previous year during which 286 people were awarded. The list was finalised by a committee of members headed by Mayor Sharadamma. Awardees have been chosen from 18 fields, including social service, sports, education, medical, theatre, environment, young talent, music, women’s empowerment, sculpture, art, folk art (janapada), literature, police and media.

Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda will present Rs 25,000 cash, a memento and a certificate to the awardees on April 6.

Ruling party leader B R Nanjundappa, said though they had earlier restricted the awards to 25 people, they had to stretch it to 45 as they had received more than 450 applications. “This time we have chosen only eligible candidates,” he said.
