For lawyer, IITian, passion takes over

For Shivakumar C S, residing in Hanumanthnagar, intrigue turned him into an inventor. But his curiosity was more focussed on finding solutions with the intent of saving lives. After months of research, he has invented some unusual devices and solutions.

Originally a lawyer who completed his MA LLB, he  became an anchor for Doordarshan and worked for 10 years.

In between he also did serials and documentaries and is now planning to direct a Kannada film, Saaguva Dariyali Savalugala Chakravyuha. But his passion lies in invention.

His first invention is close to his heart - an implementation to restrict people from taking the ceiling fan route to end their lives. "Everyday, I read about youngsters committing suicide and the first thing they get access to is the fan," says Shivakumar.

According to him, it is difficult to stop people who are  determined to end their lives due to circumstances or impulse. "If we look at past instances, the ceiling fan has always been an instant reach. So I invented this instrument, which when fitted on the fan, can avoid suicide," he explained. The instrument when fitted allows the wing portion and the central unit to come down when someone tries to put weight from below. Basically designed for common use, this 35 year old inventor has had a humbling experience for which he is yet to get a good response. "I did not create this to make money. I wanted to save people. My next step is to create awareness about this product.  It costs around `200 to 250," says Shivakumar.

His other invention is a sliding lid for the water sump.

"We have had cases of small children falling into water tank sumps. So I invented a sliding sump lid with an instant locking system," he said.

His next pursuit is inventing a system to solve the drainage problem in Bangalore and near coastal areas.

He is also looking for a solution to the traffic menace and afforestation.

"By God's grace, I have a lot of technological solutions in my mind, which I will reveal one by one," he concluded.
