National body for disabled

Volunteers from 12 states converged to form a national body to fight for the the rights of the disabled on Monday.

The National Platform for Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) was formed after various NGOs, organisations and groups demanded  a massive and influential organisation to fight for the rights of the disabled.

Championing for the cause of the disabled, MP Brinda Karat, who inaugurated the event, said there was a serious need for a Constitutional amendment to Article 14 and 19.

“Disability is not mentioned anywhere. Discrimination of the disabled should be made a punishable act in the country. The Union government needs to ensure education, employment, food and healthcare service is provided to disabled,” she said.
