Calls to cyber cops land at studio

The contact number listed as the official number of the cyber crime police station on their website www.cyberpolicebangalore.nic.in connects people to a Photo Flash store.

Complaining that the store gets a lot of calls from people to lodge cyber crime complaints, the store managers said that they have stopped responding to calls now.

“We are tired of picking up calls and telling them its the wrong number. We do not know if the same number is listed as the cyber crime police station contact number. We get so many calls from people and we tell them that we don’t know their (cyber crime police) actual number,” said the manager of the photo studio.

Even emails bounce if a person files complaints to the email id listed on the website. The website has not even been updated in the last three months.

“We are not aware of this problem but we will look into it soon,” said S Murugan, DIG, Cyber Crime, Bangalore.

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics showed that 388 cases were registered in the state so far in this year.

However, there has been very little improvement in the conviction rate. Further, statistics show that the number of cyber crime cases registered in the city have been rising steadily over the last three years. In 2009, 26 cases were registered. The number rose to 144 in 2010 and 250 in 2011.
