BANGALORE: A playground adjacent to Jayanagar swimming pool is all set for a makeover much before the summer season.

“The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Paline has sanctioned Rs 3.5 crore for a gymnasium, yoga centre, jogging track and two shuttle badminton courts. They will come up on a vacant plot attached to Cosmopolitan Club,” said N Nagaraju, a councillor of Bairasandra ward.

“Children can spend time in the play ground during summer. The seating capacity of the auditorium will be 5,000. A track for walkers and another for athletes will be ready soon,” he said. “I have seen students playing in front of their houses for want of playground. I discussed this problem with MLA B N Vijayakumar, and he encouraged me to find a solution,” he said. The multistorey building will also have changing rooms for athletes, and 20 rooms for sports persons to stay during tournaments. The centre will have rain water harvesting unit plus a tank to store 50 lakh litres of water. The water saved here will be used to clean the grounds every day.

“This concept is totally new. We already have areas dedicated to basket ball, skating and volley ball. We will now have an open air auditorium for cultural events,” Nagaraju said.

The new centre, said to be of international standards, plans to enroll members soon. Non-members will be kept out, he added.
