BANGALORE: The residents of Banaswadi Ward are craving for attention of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to redress their grievances. They are facing a lot of issues, due to lack of proper sanitation facility. For instance, the residents at PNS Layout are not happy  with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) assigninng a contractor to lay pipes at various cross roads of the Layout. They complain that the  work was not carried out properly. The result: stagnation of sewage and overflowing manholes.

It has become a routine for the residents to inform the Corporator about the overflowing manholes once in a week or 15 days. ‘’The contractor did not do the work properly. He simply laid the pipes and filled the ditches. He has forgotten to ensure smooth flow.  We have to  call the people operating sewage sucking truck to clear the manholes,’’ says K V Narayanaswamy, a resident.

Though the BBMP had sanctioned 14 borewells, there is nothing to revel about the water supply. At a few areas the residents are facing issues due to shortage of water. “The water is being supplied twice a week. There will be acute shortage of water in summer. And we have complained to the authorities concerned about the need to replace the old sanitary pipes that were laid many years ago.  With the number of houses increasing, the load of sewage on these pipes have increased,’’ says M Lakshmi, a housewife.

Meanwhile, A Kodanda Reddy, Corporator, says that he has been taking measures to mitigate water woes at various localities in Banaswadi Ward. “The BBMP had sanctioned 14 borewells for this ward, but so far only four borewells were dug. One of them is yet to be equipped with electric water pump. One borewell was dug at Jai Jawan Nagar,’’

says Kodanda Reddy.

Areas such as HRBR Layout 1st and 2nd blocks, PNS Layout, Subbayya Playa Extension, Chowdeshwari Layout, Jai Jawan Nagar, Yerra Reddy Layout, Ex-Servicemen Colony, Ramaiah Layout, Banaswadi, Dodda Banaswadi, Vijaya Bank Colony, OMBR Layout are the important areas in Banaswadi Ward. The BBMP had sanctioned `6 crore for the year 2010-11 to take up development works in this ward. The residents complain that civil workers are not clearing the garbage regularly. Assuring that measures would be taken to ensure clearing of garbage on regular basis, the Corporator adds, “Many roads were either asphalted or concretised for the benefit

of the residents.’’

Will the residents of Banaswadi get some solace and relief from the BBMP?
