The students of Avvai Home, Besant Nagar, welcomed the New Year by celebrating their annual sports day on January 6. Students of the three branches of the school — the primary school, TVR Girls HSS and the Teacher Training Institute on the school campus — joined in with a host of games, including shot-putt, relay, kho-kho, volleyball and kabaddi.
Cultural programmes underlining the need for women to take up a career in sports were hosted by the students. A Karate demo by alumni Ezhumalai turned out to be the highlight of the day. The function was presided over by R K Durai Singh, senior manager, Sports Development Authority of India.
