BANGALORE: The Tata Group recognised city level winners, from the South Zone (Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh), of the fifth annual Tata Building India School Essay Competition  2010-11, recently, at Wings House, Bangalore. The winners were selected from a competitive pool of students through fifteen city level competitions conducted in five cities for English and 12 cities for Kannada.

The theme for the 2010-11 edition of the essay competition was Poverty Reduction. The essay entries received from the enthusiastic participants featured thought provoking and inspiring ideas which clearly showcased the vision, compassion and conviction of today’s young Indians.

The English edition of the essay competition was held across Bangalore, Mangalore, Vijayawada, Vizag and Hyderabad with 226 schools participating while the Kannada edition which was introduced for the first time this year.

It saw enthusiastic participation from 400 schools across Bangalore,

Hubli-Dharward, Mysore, Gulbarga, Belgaum, Mangalore/Udupi, Davangere, Bellary, Shimoga, Tumkur, Bijapur and Raichur. Both the editions attracted a total of nearly 2.5 lakh students.

The award ceremony was held at Wings House in Bangalore and the chief guest was renowned scholar and academician Professor N S Ramaswamy, (Padma Bhushna, National Professor and Chief Mentor, IIBS and Former Founder Director of IIM Bangalore) awarded trophies and gift certificates to the winners.

The winning essays at the city level will be further judged by a prominent jury for national level recognition.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor N S Ramaswamy said, “I am really glad to be part of such an event where youth is being given an opportunity to diversify their ideas to construct a better India tomorrow. I would like to pay my tribute to the Tata Group which is a role model to the whole world for coming up with such an initiative. I urge all the youngsters to contribute something for their country as a collective effort from our side will take India to the next level.

”Tata Building India School Essay Competition is an initiative undertaken by the Tata group of companies to motivate the youth of India towards thinking about nation building. The essay competition provides a unique platform to encourage young leaders of tomorrow to showcase their expressions in writing, on a host of subjects related to nation building."
