Around 1000 girl students of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Mogappair, stressed the theme ‘Unity Pongal’ during the Pongal celebrations on the school premises on January 11.

Attired in traditional sarees, the youngsters spread the message of unity by working together to create a lip-smacking spread. Thatched huts, sugarcane arches and bullock carts dotted the school playground recreating the rustic rural setting.

Traditional games like pandiattam, pallanguzhi, and paramapadham were revived on the special occasion.

Tamil language exponent Swami Balaiah, HOD, Tamil Department, Jaya Arts and Science College, presided as the chief guest. A colourful cultural performance by the students brought the event to a close.
