BANGALORE: A truck driver was killed and the cleaner was injured after the truck plunged into a lake at T Begur near Nelamangala on the outskirts of the city on Saturday. The 20-wheel truck was carrying a military truck inside it and it is yet to be retrieved from the lake.

The deceased Satpal Singh, 40, was a native of Punjab, and cleaner Bal Singh, 32, who sustained injuries has been admitted to a hospital.

The police said that the truck was carrying a military truck and other goods.

The other lorry that was in front of the truck applied sudden brakes. Satpal Singh, in a bid to avoid hitting the lorry, steered the truck to the left. But, the vehicle rammed into an electric pole and fell into the lake. The driver was killed on the spot, while the cleaner escaped with injuries. Following the incident, the villagers alleged that the negligence of National Highway Authorities was the reason for the incident and the accident would have been averted if they had built barriers along the road.

Later, the body was fished out from the lake. “It is said that the truck was going from BEML to Delhi to deliver the military truck. The vehicles could not be retrieved from the lake as they are very heavy. Heavy cranes should be pressed into service to lift them and the operations will start only on Sunday morning,” the police added.
