Dividing a large number by five is actually very simple. All you do is multiply by 2 and move the decimal point:

1. 195 ÷ 5

Step 1: 195 x 2 = 390

Step 2: Move the decimal point one place backward – 39.0

39 is the answer

2. 2978 ÷ 5

Step 1: 2978 x 2 = 5956

Step 2: 595.6

595.6 is the answer

So what we are doing is doubling the given number and then dividing it by 10.

Assorted Multiplication Rules:

To multiply by 24:

Multiply by 8 and then multiply by 3

To multiply by 27:

Multiply by 30 and subtract 3 times the original number (which will be your answer from the first step without the 0 at the end)

To multiply by 45:

Multiply by 50 and subtract 5 times the original number (which will be your answer from the first step without the 0 at the end)

To multiply by 90:

Multiply by 9 (as above) and put a zero on the right

To multiply by 98:

Multiply by 100 and subtract twice the original number.

To multiply by 99:

Multiply by 100 and subtract the original number.
