SHOCKED FAMILY: Bera’s wailing wife and family members in Bangalore on Wednesday | Nagaraja Gadekal

BANGALORE: A city-based jeweller was abducted and murdered by unidentified assailants. Nitesh Bera (36), a resident of Bangiyappa Garden III Cross in Shantinagar and owner of BNR Jewellers on Mallikarjuna Temple Lane, Avenue Road was kidnapped on Tuesday night. His body was found at Goobegudda near Dobbspet in Tumkur on Wednesday. He was married to Uma Bera and has two children, Nilesh (6) and Neelima (2).

Police said while Bera left the shop at around 9.15 pm on Tuesday on his scooter, abductors in a four-wheeler kidnapped him. Bera informed his wife over phone that he was kidnapped and told her to hand over all the valuables to a person he was sending on his two-wheeler. Around 10.30 pm, a dark, tall man, aged around 30 years, went to his house and collected 80 grams of jewels and cash of `2,000 from his wife, the police said.

Uma said that though she pleaded with the man to release her husband, he told  her it can’t be done since the ransom was meagre. “I kept on calling my husband but he said he was fine and he would return in a while. But after 12 am, his phone was switched off. We approached Ulsoor Gate police station but were directed to Ashoknagar police station, where a kidnap case was filed at 2 am,” she said.

Bera had called his shop staff and asked them to bring the jewels near Ganesh Prasad Hotel and hand them over to a person who would come on his scooter. Though Mithun, a worker went there, he found no one and returned to the shop, police said.

“On Wednesday morning, Dobbspet police informed us that a body was found at Goobegudda and a police team with a few family members of Bera reached the spot and identified the body. Bera was stabbed in his neck,” the police added.

Police are going through Bera’s call details and workers of his shop.
