Co-operative Society scam: HC orders action

The High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to initiate criminal proceedings against Channappa, president of Srigandhadakaval Co-operative Society, in connection with irregularities in distribution of sites.

Justice Ajith Gunjal passed the order while hearing a petition filed by Channappa seeking to quash the report on irregularities submitted by the registrar of the cooperative society.

The state government in 1974, had sanctioned 14 acres of land to Srigandhadakaval Co-operative Society. Channappa had distributed 200 sites to his friends and family members.

The members of the society then filed a petition before the High Court seeking investigation on the irregularities. Hearing the petition, the court directed the registrar to investigate.

The registrar later submitted a report stating there were irregularities and suggested to initiate action against Channappa.

Channappa filed a petition challenging the report, and the HC stayed the report. After two years the HC vacated the stay, and directed to initiate criminal proceedings against Channappa.
