Extortion bid: Two shot dead

Two members of notorious rowdy Bethannagere Shankara’s gang were gunned down at a farmhouse at Kuppemala under Kudur police station limits in Nelamangala around 9 pm on Sunday.

The assailants were identified as Siddaraju and Sunil. They went to collect hafta from one Shivanna, a farm house owner in the morning.

They allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh from Shivanna to “secure Shankara’s release from jail”. When Shivanna refused to give them the money, the gangsters left the place and returned with 20 others late in the evening.

Siddaraju barged into the farm house and reportedly threatened Shivanna’s family members with a machete.  Shivanna’s son Mani, 28, opened fire at the gang from a licenced revolver, killing Siddaraju and Sunil on the spot.
