Dasara jumbos at Mysore

Dasara elephants arrived to a grand reception at the Mysore Palace on Thursday.  Balarama, who will carry the golden howdah for the 17th time along with Abhimanyu, Arjuna, Vijaya, Srirama and Gajendra, were traditionally welcomed with puja and flower petals, accompanied by instrumental music at the landmark Jayamarthanda Gate.

District minister S A Ramdas, Mayor M C Rajeshwari and a host of public representatives and officials were present. The ceremony took place during the auspicious time between 12. 40 pm and 1. 15 pm.

After puja, the elephants relished sugarcane, jaggery and ‘kadubu’.  ‘Phala tambula’ was given to top officials of the district administration, police officials and others. The elephants were taken in a procession to the entrance of Amba Vilas palace.

After the ceremony, they retired to the temporary sheds erected next to the Jayamarthanda Gate. The elephants were housed in the Sandalwood Factory after they arrived from Nagaapura village in Hunsur taluk two days ago.  The roads to the palace were lined with people to have a glimpse of the majestic animals.

Minister Ramdas said that seminars will be held on the contributions of Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar.
