An anonymous letter from students and scholars at Bangalore University’s (BU) Environmental Science Department has alleged severe Problems with teaching in the department.

The letter attributed to “students and scholars who do want to get identified” stated that the department is yet to start classes for I and III semester MSc Environmental Science.

“Classes have commenced from August 22 and all other departments have completed almost one chapter. There is one permanent teacher taking class, because guest faculty are not allowed,” it said.

The letter comes at a time when the department’s chairman BU registrar (Evaluation) R K Somashekhar are said to be in line for the post of vice-chancellor, especially when the state government is reportedly planning to shift incumbent Dr N Prabhu Dev outside the university.

“Whenever we go to the department, we don’t find Prof Somashekhar to clarify. We, as scholars, are running from pillar to pole to take signatures or for any other guidance of the head who is not available in the department. The office is always closed. Please change the head and protect the interest of students and scholars,” the letter stated.

Prof Somashekhar was unavailable for comments.
