Soon, Karnataka Prison Department to bring out new brand of clothes

Jail inmates to be involved in the making of clothes in an initiative to empower the prisoners after their release

The state prisons department, which has chalked out several projects to improve skills of the jail inmates, has now come up with the idea of marketing the merchandise produced by jail inmates.

The department is working towards making the project, soon a reality.

According to the officials, the best quality fabric will be used for the products, but the prices will be less compared to any international brand.

“We have done a research to know how the garment industry functions.  Based on that, we have planned the entire project in accordance with our requirements. There are a few people who have been trained in tailoring by the experts. They too have shown interest in the project and are keen to work on it,” the officials said.

“We are in talks with a Surat-based company which supplies fabrics. We are not going to compromise on the quality of the fabric and the material will be on a par with any other international brands. We are planning to buy the best quality threads, collars and buttons which add to the look of the garment,” the official explained.

However, they have not yet decided the price of the products, but claim it would be reasonable and cheaper compared to the existing brands.

ADGP (Prisons) K V Gagandeep said, “Once the inmates complete their term, they should not find it difficult to find a job outside. In this regard, we are planning several projects. Production of clothes is one among them and we believe this will help prisoners earn a living when they move out from here.” Further, he said the department was yet to ‘brand’ the line of clothes made by the prisoners.

“Usually, all the products made by inmates are named ‘Parivarthana’. But, we are planning a different brand name for these products . Once it is finalised, designing of logo and other works will be done,” Gagandeep said.
