Dentist ends life over harassment

A 27-year-old dentist, unable to bear the harassment of her husband, allegedly committed suicide by hanging at her house in Vijaynagar 9th Main Road on Sunday. Her family, however, cried foul over her death.

Police said the deceased has been identified as Dr Sumathi, a native of Mandya, who was married to one Mohindar, an private company employee, four years ago. They have a two-year-old daughter Tejika.

The incident took place around 11 am when she was alone in the first floor of her house and hanged herself to the ceiling after locking herself inside a room.

Mohindar had gone to his relative’s house for a Sathyanarayana puja while Tejika was playing in a neighbour’s house. Around 2 pm, Sumathi’s father-in-law went to the first floor to call her for lunch and repeatedly knocked the door. When there was no response, he broke open the door and found her hanging body.

The police found no suicide note at the spot. Her family members have filed a complaint against Mohindar who was allegedly harassing her over a family dispute. After the marriage, she was also not allowed to meet her family, the police added.

Vijayanagar police are questioning Mohindar in this connection and are waiting for the postmortem report.
