Impairments no barrier for these young, special achievers

Eight speech and hearing impaired students of S R N Adarsh College in Chamarajpet have fought all odds to clear the II  PUC examinations.

Rahul has scored 67 per cent, Revathi—65, Manju Kiran—60, Rachel—58, Aaron—52, Meghnath—49, Thilakavathi—47 and Jagadeesh—46 per cent.

These children have cleared subjects like Statistics, Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy and English. Expressing their happiness over the pass percentage and that too in English medium, these students aspire to pursue BCom from regular colleges.

Sreedevi B R, their interpreter, said, “The students have expressed their ultimate happiness through sign language. These children have not left a single stone unturned to ensure that they gave their best performances.”

“A few years ago, principal of S R N Adarsh College Sukanya Chattopadyay admitted one speech and hearing impaired student along with regular students. The student passed out in flying colours and since then, there was no looking back in admitting special children along with mainstream students to regular classes,” she said.

‘Interpretation Pays Off’

Each day has been a beautiful journey with these students in every lecture and interpreting every word for these students has paid off, recounted Sreedevi.

“The children were given daily homework to make them understand each and every lecture of all the four subjects. Periodic tests and consistent preparation ensured that they kept up the hard work and have indeed created a magic by getting such good marks,” she said.

“It’s disheartening to see several parents discouraging students with speech and hearing disabilities from studies. But these children have made a mark and have set an example for other students,” Sreedevi added.
