The Indian Institute of Science in the city has been ranked among the top institutes of the country, with its faculty in the departments of Aerospace and Electrical Engineering being adjudged the best in the country.

IIT Delhi has the best faculty in Computer Science Engineering while IIT Kanpur tops in Mechanical Engineering, according to a study by Zinnov, a globalisation and market expansion advisory firm.

The study, titled ‘Top Research Faculty in Tier-1 Engineering Institutions in India,’ contains a detailed assessment of the faculty in the country’s premier engineering institutions and identifies the top faculty by major areas of research.

At IISc Electrical Engineering Dept, B Sundar Rajan, K V S Hari, K J Vinoy, Neelesh P, Vijay Kumar and B Mehta are working on antennas while in the Aerospace Dept D K Harursampath, Joseph Mathew, S V Raghurama Rao and S Gopalkrishnan worked on aerospace structure design and fluid dynamics, it says.

The faculty in these institutes have the highest number of industry and government research grants (about five to six grants per faculty), international and national journal references, conference publications and patents (about 90 per faculty) to their credit.

In addition, these top institutes have a higher proportion of senior faculty members, who all hold PhDs, and have a overall experience of around 20 years.

The IISc, followed by IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi, have been ranked the top institutes because of their focus on research and good external connect of faculty with industry and government. IIT Madras can boast of the highest number of awards and honours won by the faculty with 15 coveted achievements (IEEE fellowship, Bhatnagar awards, etc.), besides 60 international and over 40 national awards and fellowships.
