Man arrested for attacking churches

The city police arrested a 33-year-old man for attacking various churches in and around the city from the past five years.

The city police arrested a 33-year-old man for attacking various churches in and around the city from the past five years.

The accused has been identified as Sajjan Kumar alias Babu, a native of Mathagondapalli in Denkinikota taluk in Tamil Nadu.

Investigation revealed that Babu was involved in the four church attack cases and he confessed that he was against forcible conversions and wanted to teach Christians a lesson.

A special investigation team which has been formed to investigate the case is probing the case and also questioning him if he has any associates.

It may be recalled that in 2008-2009, there were series of attacks on churches in and around city. The government had also ordered a CID probe into the matter.

Babu had attacked a church at Yedavanahalli in Attibele and had desecrated the statue of Jesus Christ.

He had also damaged doors and window panes of the church and had set fire to the Bible and curtains of the church.

After a few days he barged into the Infant Jesus church near Huskur Gate in Hebbagodi on Hosur Road and had damaged the security guard’s room and set fire to a Maruti Omni van belonging to a parish priest of the church. Similar incidents were reported in Mathigiri and Handvadi check post in Tamil Nadu.
