High drama prevailed near Mahatma Gandhi Statue near Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday afternoon when seven members of a family, including two women, attempted suicide by dousing themselves  in petrol and trying to set themselves afire.

The family alleged that the Bidadi police did not arrest an accused who tried to rape a 22-year-old woman from their family.

Guruningaiah, a native of Thayapppana Doddi in Ramanagaram district, along with his family, came to MG Road and sat on a protest around 3.15 pm. They poured petrol over themselves and tried to immolate themselves. Luckily, beat policemen attached to Cubbon Park police station reached the spot and took them to the police station.

The family said that the younger brother of one Muthaiah allegedly raped and murdered Guruningaiah’s younger daughter Sneha (name changed) at Harohalli in 2013 and he was arrested. On Wednesday night, Muthaiah (28), who was waiting to take revenge, allegedly molested Guruningaiah’s elder daughter who is said to be physically challenged. They filed a case at the Bidadi police station.

A police officer said that the family was misled by some people and they decided to commit suicide. They also demanded action against Assistant Sub-inspector Muniyappa for dereliction of duty. Bidadi police on Thursday arrested Muthaiah and he was remanded in judicial custody.
