974 Booked for Drunken Driving

In a special drive against drunken driving, the city traffic police  filed cases against 974 people in just five hours across the city on Saturday.

In a special drive against drunken driving, the city traffic police  filed cases against 974 people in just five hours across the city on Saturday.

The special drive was held between 9 pm to 2 am at 126 places around the city and about 13,667 vehicles were stopped and their drivers/riders were checked for drunken driving. Out of them, 972 men and two women were found under the influence of alcohol beyond permissible limits. The highest number of cases, 64, were booked in Peenya traffic police station limits.

“A bus driver, 21 lorry drivers, 50 auto drivers, 162 car drivers, 713 two-wheeler riders, 12 maxi-cab drivers and 15 tempo drivers have been booked for the offence,” stated a press release from the police. The police also impounded the driving licences of those who were caught during the drive and have recommended the Transport Department for their suspension.
