Gukãrah prathamo varno

mayadi-guna - bhasakah,

Rukãro dvitiyo brahma

The first syllable gu represents the anti-principle such as maya, and the second syllable ru signifies the supreme knowledge that destroys the illusion of maya.

Maya is that which prevents you from experiencing and understanding divinity just like a hard covered shell on the soft inner kernel of a fruit.

You are said to be covered in the veil of maya, when

i. You don’t believe in God and Guru, or in the existence of the soul.

ii. You take spirituality very lightly. You show more interest towards sensational news and views.

iii. When you don’t know anything about attainment and you are all the time focusing on entertainment and other worldly attractions.

iv. If you have fear, suspicion, duality, conflicts, complexes and ego.

v. When your mind is weak and is triggered by imaginations, hallucinations, illusions and delusions.

vi. When you are body, mind and senses centred and not soul-centred.

vii. When you self-centred.

Lord Shiva says, when you come out of your limitations of caste, creed and religion, then you come out of the ‘gu’ factor in you which is nothing but maya or darkness. Then, you can see the light of the Guru, which is the ‘ru’ element.

Your soul is enveloped in darkness of ignorance as the Gu element covers and envelopes the light of the soul itself.

Lord Krishna the lord of yoga is fondly known as yogeshwara.

He explains in the Bhagavad Gita that he created this world through the power of his ‘yogamaya’.

He further says, “It is very difficult to cross my maya.”

The only path to get rid of maya is to follow the teachings of the Guru, constant and consistent worship of Guru’s lotus feet for self -purification, atonement of sins and always seeking the Grace of the Guru because Gurus and Avadhutas (messengers of truth) are Mayateeta or beyond maya, Gunateeta - beyond attributes and Kaalateeta beyond the limitations of time.

Therefore only the Guru can teach you how to feel, touch, calibrate and celebrate your soul.
