BANGALORE: Staff of the Forest Department deputed to the BBMP’s Forest Cell met with BBMP Mayor B S Sathyanarayana on Thursday after they claimed he made demotivating comments about the cell.

At a function to distribute Environment Awards on Monday, the Mayor raised questions about the work done by 40 Forest department officials deputed in the civic body. “We only need one official from the department to issue permits to cut trees that are causing problems,” he had said.

Brijesh Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests, BBMP, said a few officials were unhappy with the Mayor’s statements and wanted to repatriate to the parent department. “The cell is short-staffed. There are only 19 members for 800-plus sq km. I need at least 100 members,” Kumar added.

Meanwhile, as the officials held a discussion with the Mayor, Rajashekharaiah,  a forest official suspended for dereliction of duty and repatriated to the parent department, started filming the conversation. The Forest Cell members objected to this and a verbal duel ensued.  The Mayor intervened and said a meeting will be held on Tuesday to discuss the issues further.
