BANGALORE: To help Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) deal with garbage, the State government has appointed IAS officer Darpan Jain as Special Commissioner for Solid Waste Management (SWM).

He was transferred from  the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) to BBMP on Wednesday. He will head the SWM cell and will assume charge on Thursday.

Jain, a 2001 batch IAS officer, is a mechanical engineering graduate from Delhi College of Engineering and holds an MTech from IIT, New Delhi.

BBMP Commissioner M Lakshminarayana said zonal superintending engineers, who are looking after SWM, will now report to Jain.  “At present, we have only a few environment engineers. In the coming days, each ward will have environment engineer with an Assistant Engineer for SWM alone,” he added.

Speaking to Express, Jain said, “I am aware of the garbage crisis in Bangalore. It is early for me to comment on a solution. I need to study the issue and discuss it with officials.” According to him, the problem requires a multi-pronged approach as there are many stakeholders involved. He hoped his previous postings at Yadgir and Dharwad will help him understand the issue better.
