CHENNAI: The fresh batch of students for the academic year 2014-2015 was given a grand welcome at Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science for Women recently.

Priyadharshana Jain, director of the Department of Jainology, Centre for Buddhist Studies, University of Madras, Chennai, was the chief guest on the occasion. The other dignitaries included chairman Sethu Kumanan, secretary Kogilam Kumanan, advisor P Ranjithakani, director of Alumni Association Rani Christhu Dhas, Principal V Renuka Devi and vice-principal Meera Murugesh.

A special powerpoint presentation was conducted to give the newcomers an insight into the activities and programmes of the college. 

The invocation and ‘Mother Song’ gave a grand start to the programme. It was followed by the welcome address by Principal Renuka. She said,“Daisaku Ikeda is the father of humanistic education, who spreads peace through his writings and dialogues,” and asked the students to follow his principles.

Two students from the batch that passed out shared their experience about the college.

Chief guest Priyadharshana Jain gave a powerpoint presentation on holistic education and the need for a humanistic approach in all spheres of life.

In her advice to the students she asked them to read newspapers and aware of everyday events. She focused on the connection between man and nature and the need to preserve it because the deficit of values in human beings leads to environmental hazards.
