Prasanna, a labourer, set his wife ablaze, after a quarrel on Tuesday night. The victim, Arpita (20). was rushed to Victoria Hospital after her neighbours doused the fire by covering her with a blanket. However, she died soon after giving her statement to the police.
The incident took place on Tuesday night, according to the Talaghattapura police, who were informed about the incident by Arpita’s neighbours, who had initially heard Prasanna and Arpita fighting and later her screams as she was set ablaze. They rushed to their house and found her trying to put out the fire and managed to douse it.
The couple, originally from Mandya, moved to the city a few months ago. According to the statement given by Arpita to the police, the they were frequently quarrelling as Prasanna was asking her to get money from her parents to lease a house. Arpita, however, had refused to do so by stating her parents had given sufficient money at the time of their wedding. She had also allegedly been asking him to take her to a hospital as she thought she was pregnant and he had refused to do so. Like most days, the two had a fight in this regard on Tuesday, when Prasanna killed her.
The police are on the lookout for Prasanna and have registered a case based on Arpita’s statement.
