Red Cross Day Observed

The Red Cross Society observed World Red Cross Day on Thursday to mark the 187th birth anniversary of its founder Jean Henry Dunant.

Lauding the work being done by the society in blood donation, Upa Lokayukta Justice Subhash B Adi said: “According to law, blood brothers are siblings born from the same parents. But through the donation of blood, we can all become ‘blood brothers’.” He spoke about the importance of blood donation through real life examples where a significant number of people die due to loss of blood in accidents and other medical conditions.

“What is worse is that some hospitals in villages don’t even have necessary equipment to store blood. Hence they cannot do the needful when situations arise,” observed.

Kannada actress Shruthi, sharing an experience in which she had to donate blood during an outdoor shoot, said: “My cameraman started vomiting blood when we were shooting in a place far away from city limits. The nearest hospital was 20 km away. After reaching the hospital, doctors said only if someone could donate blood they’d be able to save my cameraman. I immediately did what was expected of me and was overwhelmed.”

The Society can be contacted on 22264205.
