A three-year-old boy drowned in a sump at an under-construction site in Maruti Layout in Peenya on Saturday.

The deceased is Yashwant, son of Mallikarjun, a security guard at a private company, and Rajeshwari, who works at a garment factory. They are from Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh and had come to the city three years ago. They have another son, Jaswant.

According to police sources, the incident took place around 4.30 pm. Yashwant had been playing in front of his house, but was nowhere to be found when one of his relatives Chikkamma came looking for him. She then found him dead inside a sump at the construction site nearby.

The construction area belongs to one Anand and the workers had left the sump open after stopping work earlier. Peenya police have registered a case of negligence against Anand and the construction supervisor.
