A 72-year-old woman was found murdered at her daughter’s house in Binny Layout in Jagjivanram Nagar on Saturday evening. The police said the assailants attacked her with an iron rod.

The victim, Ramarathnamma from Mysore, had come to the city a week ago to meet her daughter Lakshmi, who works at a private company. Police said Lakshmi, her husband Shekhar and daughter Varsha left for work in the morning.

Ramarathnamma was alone at home and the neighbours had seen her around 12.30 pm. Around 6.30 pm, Varsha  returned home and found Ramarathnamma lying in a pool of blood in the bathroom. She informed her parents, who then alerted the police.

“The assailants barged into the house and hit her on the head with an iron rod while she was washing clothes in the bathroom.   They escaped with her jewellery but did not ransack the house or the almirah,” a police source said. As there was no forced entry into the house, police suspect that people who knew the family might be behind the crime.

Jewellery Worth `22 Lakh Stolen

Unidentified miscreants allegedly barged into the house of a retired Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) employee in Kaggadasanapura on Saturday night and escaped with jewellery worth `22 lakh.

Police sources said the incident took place at the residence of Chikkamuniswamy. Fourteen people were living in his two houses, which stand adjacent to each other. After dinner on Saturday, all of them decided to sleep in one house, leaving the other empty.

The miscreants broke open the lock of the empty house and opened the door of the pooja room by using a duplicate key. Then they escaped with 1.6 kg of gold, but did not touch the silver articles.
