BANGALORE:  Three-year-old Mariam Kausar, a victim of  alleged medical negligence, might have to undergo a surgical procedure to remove unwanted fluid accumulated around the brain at Manipal Hospital on Old Airport Road. Doctors at Manipal Hospital had suggested hydrocephalus vp shunt surgery surgery when the child was taken to the hospital for a medical re-evaluation of her condition on Thursday.

Mariam’s family had sought time before agreeing to the surgery and had sought the opinion from doctors from the National Institute Mental Health and Science (NIMHANS) and BGS Global Hospital. The Child’s uncle B S Rafiulla said the doctors had told them to go ahead with the procedure and the same was communicated to Manipal Hospital.

An MRI scan of the head revealed accumulation of fluid in the brain and a team of neurologists, neurosurgeons and paediatric intensivists will decide the future course of action after complete evaluation and consulting the patient’s family, added the statement.
