2 New Agriculture Universities for State Planned

The universities in Bagalkot and Dharwad will focus on providing better opportunities to agriculturalists and reach out to industries

BANGALORE: Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University, in collaboration with the FKCCI and the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, will soon set up two universities - The Centre for Excellence in Food Development in Bagalkot and the International Centre for Agriculture Development in Dharwad.

These two universities will focus on providing better opportunities to agriculturalists and reach out to associated industries.

Interacting with reporters after a meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, interim president of the Texas Agriculture and Mechanical University, Mark A Hussey, said that the initiative would provide immense learning opportunities for both the United States and India and may, in the long term, help in addressing agriculture and food-related issues in countries in South Asia and Africa as well.

“Most importantly, the programme is focused on industry relations, which will help the students of these universities in ensuring that their products and knowledge reach the market and benefit more people,” Hussey said.

The two new universities are being planned at a time when a memorandum of understanding between the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad and the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University is completing 12 years.

“This is a step towards expanding and exploring what we can do for each other,” Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Dr D P Biradar said.
