'Priest' Held for Cheating Devotees

BENGALURU: A 46-year-old ‘priest’ was arrested on Friday for conning devotees of valuables on the pretext of performing a special puja. The police recovered 500 grams of gold, worth around Rs 12.5 lakh, from him.

The accused Shashank Purohith used to lure people saying they would become wealthy if they conducted the puja. He would demand their ornaments for a 40-day puja and later, pawn the ornaments.

According to police sources, at least 10 such cases were reported at Vijayanagar police limits last week. Shashank has been remanded to judicial custody.
