BENGALURU: If you are a resident of Jayanagar or Basavanagudi, chances are that you have already been to Hari Super Sandwich, once also quirkily known as 10th Cross. What started as a counter in a tailoring shop, Hari Super Sandwich, has now turned into a chain with five joints in South Bengaluru. Usually, located around colleges, these joints operate out of garages converted into small pocket friendly shops. Hari Super Sandwich’s specialty is the famous sandwich which is made using soft bread specially bought from Hindupur, a small town on the border of Karnataka and Seemandhra.

This special Hindupur sandwich is usually spicy and toasted on a tava. Named after the owner, Hari, who has put in a lot of effort to tweak the age-old sandwich to cater to the Indian tastebuds, these joints serve unique sandwiches like Chilli Cheese Sandwich, Gulkan Toast, Cheese Chilli Dahi and Congress (masala peanuts) Toast apart from the normal capsicum and tomato sandwiches.

Hari Super Sandwich also sells chats and drinks like Lemon juice, Jaljeera and Coke, Seven up and ThumsUp with a dash of masala.

While a friend and I waited at the shop near NMKRV College in Jayanagar,  we could see at least 30 people buy piles of freshly made Cheese Chilli Toast within a span of 40 minutes. Tucked away in a corner on the 8th Main, this is an ideal place for college kids to hang out as well as grab a quick snack as all the items on the menu cost between `15 and 40

While most people swear by the Cheese Chilli Toast and the American Corn Sandwich, my absolute favourite is the Chocolate Sandwich. Priced at `32 this delicious and innovative sandwich is a bar of chocolate melted between bread and butter and cut into small squares. The best part of this toast is that it is not very sweet and is a perfectly sweet ending after a spicy chilli-based toast.

The sandwiches are amazingly soft and do not have hard crusts because they are not grilled but are lightly toasted on a large tava.

The staff is very friendly and the service is quick and jovial with the sandwich guy  cracking silly jokes as he puts together your breaded treat.

Hari Super Sandwich is also  known for its Bread Masala which is made from the leftover bread crusts with grated carrots and spices and peanuts. Dahi Boondi, Dal Masala and fizzy drinks are other popular items on the menu.

Must try items include the  Chocolate Sandwich, Cheese Chilli Toast and the American Sweet Corn Sandwich.

Hari Super Sandwich has definitely moved on from its tailoring shop days with two shops near NMKRV College, Jayanagar, one near Jain College near JP Nagar Central, one near BDA Complex Banashankari and one shop near Jain College, V V Puram.

Prices start at `15.
