BANGALORE: After being questioned by J J Nagar police, a 35-year-old woman and her daughter attempted suicide by consuming poison at their house in Padarayanapura on Monday.

It is said that the woman and her husband Kousar cheated some locals in chit funds and tried to evade returning `1.5 crore they collected.

The victims’ family claimed that they were pushed to suicide as they were being harassed by the police and the locals. Investigating officials on their part maintained that the family was trying to gain sympathy and escape from the cheating case.

Rihana Taj and Arbia Taj (13) have been hospitalised and their condition is said to be serious.

Police said a cheating case had been filed against Kousar, a cloth merchant. He has been absconding since the last one month and is involved in another cheating case in Kengeri police limits. As he is on the run, Rihana and Arbia were summoned but were let go after questioning, police said.
