1 Dies Trying to Board Chennai Mail

BENGALURU:  One senior citizen was killed and another passenger lost his right leg when they lost balance and fell onto the railway track while trying to board the Chennai Mail at the City railway station on Monday night.

The mishap occurred at 9.45 pm when the train was being taken in the reverse direction from the pitline of the station where trains are stationed to platform no. 1, said the Railway Protection Force police.

The train was scheduled to depart at 10.10 pm.

As soon as the passengers on the platform saw the train approaching, they made a dash to the general coaches of the train. In the melee, two passengers went under the track, said D Ramakrishnappa, assistant sub-inspector, Government Railway Police. “A man around 60 was killed on the spot. His body was almost cut into two halves with loose skin holding the two halves,” he said.

The other person who fell on the tracks was around 45 years, and his right leg was severed under the wheels, he said. An ambulance was called and he was immediately shifted to Victoria Hospital in an unconscious state. It is not known if he will survive, but doctors are attending to him in the emergency ward, the ASI added. Details of the individuals are yet to be ascertained.

Chennai Mail finally left around 10.50 pm, a delay of 40 minutes.
