BENGALURU: The High Court on Monday refused to stay the enhancement of fee for registration of hospitals and clinics.

However, the division bench of Acting Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice B V Nagarathna issued notices to the state government and the Hubballi-Dharwad Muncipal Corporation in response to a public interest petition filed by the Indian Medical Association, Hubballi, and Karnataka Private Medical Establishment.

Recently, the Hubballi-Dharwad Muncipal Corporation had enhanced the licence fee for registration of 10-bed hospitals to `2,000 and for 100-plus-bed hospitals to `30,000.

The petitioners contended that the medical profession is similar to that of lawyers and that the action of the Corporation was discriminatory in nature.
