BENGALURU: Chairman of the Legislative Committee on Women and Child Safety V S Ugrappa charged that Pragathi Pre-University College, where a student was shot dead by a staffer recently, is functioning illegally.

He told reporters on Tuesday that the committee visited the institution on Monday and found that it was operating without proper permissions. The authorities concerned have been asked to initiate action against the institution, he said.

Noting that the institution had no pre-sanction from the Education Department and the PU Education Board to run the residential college, he said, “The committee had found that the institution had also violated Revenue Land Act, operating within the area earmarked for residential purposes.”

He said the committee had found several lapses on the part of the management in providing a safe environment for students staying in the hostel. “I will bring this to the notice of the ministers concerned to set right the problems and demand action against guily officials,” Ugrappa added.

When contacted, chairman and MD of the institution Somsingh said, “We have one of the best security arrangements within the premises after the ill-fated incident.” He claimed that every month the institution spends around Rs 1.75 lakh for security.

Refuting the charge that the college is being run illegally, he asked, “If that is the case, how could the PU Board give permission to announce results?”
