Bangalore Police Rapped for Identifying Juveniles

The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has sought an explanation from the Bengaluru City Police.

BENGALURU: The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has sought an explanation from the Bengaluru City Police, North-East division, for revealing the names of juveniles accused in a bike theft case.

“It is a violation of Section 21 of Juvenile Justice Act 2000/2006. The Act states that publication of the identity of juveniles is prohibited,” the notice said. “In this regard, the Commission has written a letter to the DCP, North-east division, to take action so that identity of the juvenile is not published in any print or visual media. The Commission has asked the DCP not to repeat this,” a release said.

During a press meet held by North-east division police on Monday, police had revealed the names and identities of five juveniles who had stolen bikes in Yelahanka, Sampigehalli and Kodigehalli. North-East Division DCP Vikash Kumar has expressed regret for erroneously revealing the identities of the juveniles.
