BU Harassment Case Settled Out of Court

BANGALURU :A work-place harassment case filed by four women faculty members of Bangalore University’s Kannada Department has ended in an out-of-court settlement with the vice-chancellor.

Following a direction by the Karnataka High Court, the V-C and both the advocates (the university’s and the complainants’) had convened an out-of-court settlement meeting with the four and the then Head of the Kannada Department Prof Honnu Siddartha on Thursday. The four-hour meeting ended up on a compromise.

The V-C has sent a written communication to the High Court, saying, “The university will initiate stringent measures against the staff in such cases in the future.”

Prof K K Seetamma, Registrar-Administration, told Express, “It was difficult for us to convince them for a compromise. The HoD against whom those women complained wanted them to write an apology letter. The V-C managed to bring the matter to a close and arrive at a ruling.”

“When the matter went to the High Court, the judge forwarded it to the university saying such cases must be solved at the V-C level. So we called the meeting,” Seetamma said.
