BENGALURU: A 23-year-old labourer died after he fell from the 9th floor of an under construction apartment at Thurahalli on Uttarahalli Road near Thalaghattapura. According to Deepu Gowda, organising secretary of Labourers’ Welfare Association, the incident took place on Friday and the site owner and building contractors tried to hush up the matter by not informing the police.

The deceased has been identified as Santhoshkumar Thakur, a native of Bihar who was residing in Kashinagar. He was working as a welder at the construction site for the last six months.

Police said the incident took place around 5.30 pm on Friday. Another worker Dilipkumar who saw Thakur fall, alerted security guards who rushed him to a nearby hospital.

The builder, said to be a reputed firm, and the site owner had not informed the police about the incident till midnight. However, locals who learnt about the incident called the police.

Later site owner Harish offered a bribe to the police to hush up the matter, police said. Deepu Gowda told Express that contractors Naveen, Shobha and Upendra threatened Thakur’s family not to file a case with the police. “They were also forcing them to cremate the body to prevent an autopsy. The victim’s family approached the association and we asked the doctors to do a postmortem,” said Gowda.

A police officer said, “A case of negligence has been filed against six, including Harish and the contractor of the fabrication company. The postmortem was conducted at KIMS hospital.”
