Forced Sex in Prison: SHRC Seeks Action

BENGALURU: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) will approach the Home Department to make sure action is taken to protect women prisoners at Parappana Agrahara.

The commission had earlier recommended that three women prison staff members be moved out of Parappana Agrahara when, after a visit to the prison, it came to light that they had forced three women to have sex with male inmates. The visit was made in November last year after Express had reported the happenings in the prison.

During the visit, the prisoners denied the reports. However, as the commission members were leaving, a prisoner handed over a letter to one of them with the names of three women prison staffers. SHRC recommended that the three be moved out.

“Since no action has been taken despite the recommendation, we will inform the Home Department and ensure that the women are protected,” said Meera Saxena, acting chairperson, shrc.
